Compensation: Stipend-based pay, commensurate with experience

ABOUT THE ROLE

Scranton Shakespeare Festival is seeking a Scenic Designer who can also construct their own work for our Summer 2026 Season.

This is a hands-on, highly collaborative role ideal for a creative problem-solver who thrives in a small-budget, limited-space environment. We are looking for someone who can make something out of nothing and transform constraints into compelling theatrical storytelling.

This role combines design vision with practical build execution.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Develop scenic design concepts in collaboration with directors and producers
Create renderings, ground plans, and build drawings appropriate to the scale of the space
Source cost-effective materials within budget parameters
Lead and execute construction of scenic elements
Oversee load-in, strike, and transitions between productions
Ensure scenic safety and structural integrity
Collaborate closely with lighting, sound, and stage management teams

IDEAL CANDIDATE

Experience in scenic design for theatre
Strong practical construction skills. Carpentry experience required
Comfortable working within tight budgets and small performance spaces
Creative thinker who embraces minimalism and resourcefulness
Strong communicator and collaborative team member
Available on-site in Scranton for the core build and production period
Non-local applicants welcome. Housing provided for the duration of the contract.
